Adarsh Sanctuary- Villa

Interior Design

A villa interior designed for a family that reinterprets Indian spatial and material sensibilities within a contemporary residential setting.

Context

India Modern has steadily emerged as a defining approach within contemporary interior practice. Rooted in Indian art and culture while accommodating modern living, it brings together tradition and ergonomics into a cohesive, lived-in expression.

The brief for this villa was to create a home that reflects this balance. Working within a developer-built structure, the design focuses on translating these ideas into a space that feels grounded, functional, and relevant to present-day use.

Design Approach

The material palette draws from natural finishes such as lime plaster, terracotta cladding, and marble flooring, introducing warmth and tactile depth while remaining durable and climate responsive.

Wooden columns appear across key spaces and act as a unifying architectural element, visually tying together the different material layers of the house. Each detail is resolved with intent, ensuring that functional elements contribute meaningfully to the overall composition.

Openings were widened and windows enlarged to improve daylight penetration and cross ventilation, while a layer of hollow brick above the terrace slab enhances thermal performance.

Spatial Experience

The interiors are organised as a continuous sequence where the foyer, living, and dining areas read as a single volume. Finishes, tones, and furniture flow across spaces, maintaining visual continuity while allowing each zone to function independently.

The ground floor lounge is designed to be flexible, transforming into a guest or television space when required. Low seating defines the room, complemented by a window ledge that extends into a retractable bed, drawing from traditional Indian seating.

Private spaces adopt distinct moods. The master bedroom uses a restrained palette of marble and brass inlays to create a calm environment, while the children’s room introduces softer forms, arched panelling, and a carved reading nook that brings a sense of play into the space.
