Tandon Residence
Architecture
A double-height arrival
A private residence designed for a family in Sadashivnagar that prioritises expansive volumes, north-facing light, and strong connections to the surrounding landscape.
Context
Located in the residential neighbourhood of Sadashivnagar in Bangalore, the project sits on an 8,000 sq ft plot and was designed as a large family home. The brief emphasised openness, natural light, and ventilation. The design therefore focused on creating generous volumes and clear spatial relationships that allow the house to feel expansive while remaining comfortable for everyday living.
Design Approach
The architecture is organised around large openings, skylights, and double-height volumes that allow daylight to move through the house across the day. Most window openings are oriented toward the north, ensuring softer daylight while minimising heat gain.
Material choices emphasise honesty and durability. Exposed brick surfaces and raw concrete elements introduce warmth and texture while allowing the structure to remain visually expressed. The house follows a conventional RCC structural system that supports wide spans and large glazed openings.
Spatial Experience
The entrance to the upper residential level opens into a dramatic double-height living space defined by large windows that frame views of the surrounding greenery. These openings allow light to move deep into the interior while reinforcing a sense of openness.
Balconies and terraces extend the living spaces outward, allowing indoor areas to remain visually connected to the landscape. The resulting home balances scale with comfort, creating a residence where light, air, and spatial generosity shape the everyday experience of living.
